Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to requently asked questions for Coaches & Parents

When will rainout/cancellation notifications be made?

Our board of directors will make every attempt to determine playability of our fields following a rain/weather event as early in the day as possible. We generally try to make that determination no later than 3:00pm on gamedays, however we ask for your patience, as all of our board members are volunteers and are not always able to leave their jobs to assess field conditions early in the day. Also, we ask that you understand that we make the determination on field playability based on the estimated condition of the fields at game time, as well as the amount of work needed to repair damage to those fields prior to the next days games if games are played on wet fields. RRL has invested over $20,000 in our fields for the 2024 season, and we will error on the side of caution to prevent excessive damage and costly repairs. In the event of a rain/weather cancellation, all coaches and player families will be notified via text notification (if enabled) and via the SportsEngine mobile app. Please do not call, text, email board members asking if games are cancelled; we cannot respond to multiple individual questions and will notify everyone in the manner described above as early as possible. Unless otherwise notified, always consider all scheduled games as "still on."

When will rained out games be rescheduled?

We will make every attempt to reschedule any games that are cancelled due to rain/weather, however we cannot guarantee that all cancelled games can be rescheduled if excessive weather events occur during the season. Coaches and families will be notified via an updated schedule in the SportsEngine mobile app if/when games are cancelled/postponed/rescheduled.

Does RRL provide equipment for players and coaches?

RRL provides game balls for use during games. For our introductory divisions (Teeball & Jr. Rookie) a batting tee will be provided for use during games as well. Coaches should each take one game ball to be handed out to a player at the end of each game.

For our older age groups, RRL provides game balls and catcher's equipment (if needed) for use during games. Catcher's equipment is available in the shed between fields B and C, and should be returned to the shed at the end of each game. PLEASE do not leave catcher's equipment in the dugouts assuming the next game/team will use it and return it. At the conclusion of the early (5:45pm) game, the game balls should be left at home plate for use in the late game. Game balls do NOT get handed out to players in divisions Rookie, Minors, Majors, Babe Ruth (Baseball) or 8U, 12U and 14U (Softball). At the end of the late game, game balls can be returned to a board member.

RRL does not provide equipment for team practices. We may be able to assist by providing used practice balls IF coaches are diligent in returning used game balls nightly.

What are the league's uniform standards?

All recreation league players will be provided a team shirt and an official RRL league hat (hats are optional for softball). Each player must provide their own gray baseball pants. All players must be in uniform during official games. The wearing of travel team apparel (hats, shirts, etc.) is not permitted during recreation league play.  Helmets with a travel team logo are permitted only due to the expense involved in providing multiple helmets.

What color will our team's shirts be?

While we do our best to match team colors with team sponsor color palettes (spring), we cannot guarantee color selection. Both in spring and fall recreation league we make it a policy to not release shirts color information prior to shirts being delivered to teams. This is due to the possibility of colors being changed during production due to low/inadequate stock, and to prevent parents from buying matching color clothing/apparel which may no longer match when unfirms are handed out.

What equipment will my player need?

All players will need to provide their own batting helmet, glove and bat. USSSA and USA stamped bats are approved for league use, and should be appropriate for the age group your child is playing in. Sharing of helmets should be discouraged, and parents should not rely on volunteer coaches to provide loaner equipment.

Where can I find the rules?

RRL operates under USSSA rules and guidelines with specific modifications. All RRL specific rules can be found at http://www.rileyrec.org/rules Any rules not specifically address in the RRL rules packets are defaulted to USSSA rules.

How do I add a parent/guardian to the team app?

Additional parents/guardians can be added to your player's profile in one of two ways. The parent who registered the player, and who has access to the team app can add an additional parent/guardian by following the instructions outlined here: https://mobile-help.sportsengine.com/en/articles/8262157-how-to-add-a-guardian. Coaches/Team Admins can add additional parents/guardians by following the instructions outlined here: https://mobile-help.sportsengine.com/en/articles/8264305-how-to-add-a-guardian-to-a-player-s-profile-through-the-roster

How do I request my player be moved up or down to another division?

AFTER your player is registered for their respective age division, parents can request their player play up, or down, based on ability and experience. Not all requests will be honored, and each request will be reviewed by our board of directors on a case by case basis. Requests can be made by visiting www.rileyrec.org/playupdown

coaches: frequently asked questions

How do I record a final score?

Head Coaches (either coach involved in the game) must enter a final score at the completion of each game, within the SportsEngine mobile app. Recording scores in a timely manner is critical to keeping accurate standings. Unrecorded final scores may result in improper seeding during the season championship tournament. Coaches should navigate to the game being scored in their team schedule:

1. Click on the game event itself to open the game

2. Click "SCORE" in the bottom of the screen

3. Enter a final score and change the game status from to "FINAL"

4. Click "SAVE" in the upper-right corner of the screen

(see video tutorial below)

How do I know which team is HOME and which team is VISITOR?

In your team's schedule, if a game is listed as "(your team) AT (another team)" then your team is the VISITOR.

If the game is listed as "(another team) AT (your team)" then your team is the HOME team.

Who is responsible for operating the scoreboard?

The visiting team should provide a parent or assistant coach to operate the scoreboard. The scoreboard controllers can be obtained from a board member on duty at the concession stand. Operating the scoreboard is fairly simple, and a brief tutorial can be provided by a board member. Scoreboard controllers may be left in the visiting dugout (turned on) following each night's early game, for use during the late game. Late game visiting coaches should return the controller to the concessions stand upon completion of their game. (Teeball does not keep score; Jr. Rookie is optional scorekeeping)

How do I schedule additional practices for my team?

Coaches, please visit www.rileyrec.org/reservations and follow instructions to view field availability and request a reservation.
